CLAY CO., Ill. - Clay County Sheriff Andy Myers has released information on the late-night shooting incident that occurred in the village of Wendelin.

Myers said that on Tuesday, February 13, at approximately 10:51 p.m. his office received a report that a subject had been shot in Wendelin.

When deputies arrived on the scene they located the victim, a 29-year-old male, suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

The male suspect, who was still at the scene, was taken into custody without incident.

During the course of the investigation it was learned that the suspect had a loaded handgun and the victim (a friend) was attempting to disarm him, due to a fear of the suspect harming himself or someone else.

During the struggle for the handgun, it was discharged, causing the bullet to strike the victim in the leg.

The victim was transferred to a local hospital, where he was treated and released early Wednesday morning.

As result of the investigation, Brandon L. O’Dell, 33 of Ingraham, has been arrested for the offenses of Reckless Discharged of a Fireman, Domestic Battery, and Aggravated Battery. O’Dell was transported to the Clay County Jail where he was awaiting the setting of bond and his first court appearance. He appeared yesterday and bond was set at just $1,000 cash.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Technicians, Clay County Ambulance Service, and Ingraham/Clay City First Responders.
