WHITE CO., Ill. - White County Sheriff Doug Maier has issued a warning to motorists regarding driving through water on roadways...which apparently has been ongoing in several spots in our coverage area.
Maier said the White County Sheriff's Office has had several instances where people have tried to drive through roadways with water over the road.
"Fortunately," Maier said, "we had been able to get to the people and no one has been injured. We do still have several roadways covered with water. I would like to again warn the public of the danger of trying to drive through a road covered with water. There is no way to know if the roadway might be washed out and it is very difficult to determine the depth of the water and the edge of the roadway."
Maier urged drivers not to attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It is best to turn around and find another route.
"If you find yourself stranded in a vehicle in the water," Maier said, "stay inside your vehicle and call 911 for assistance."
