CARMI, Ill. - An officer on routine patrol this morning (Monday, April 17) was the one to spot and call in a fire that broke out at a location at 404 Shipley Street in Carmi.

Carmi police officer Josh Moore was the one who called in the fire, and he was joined at the scene by White County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Cantrell, who arrived shortly after the Carmi Fire Department did.

Moore spoke to Ron Beck, a neighbor, to see if anyone might have been in the building. It was determined that no one was inside. Beck advised that Kathy Buchanan was the owner of the building, and when officers spoke to her, she stated that the structure was new and that Beck apparently was supposed to have been moving in to it.

Buchanan also advised that she'd had a trail camera positioned across the road from the building, so she retrieved the SD card from it and gave it to law enforcement; unfortunately, upon review, it turned out that there was no data on the card.

Carmi Fire Chief Larry Hite requested the state fire marshal be notified and summoned to the scene, and the investigation is pending.
