CLAY CO., Ill. - A wreck that occurred Saturday afternoon may have been caused by the driver having a medical emergency.
Witnesses to the situation stated that the incident (which occurred Saturday, December 31, 2016) emerged after a driver of a white minivan was traveling west on Route 50 in the vicinity of the U.S. 45 turn when the minivan drove off the highway and into the median in the vicinity of an overpass, beneath which is a drainage ditch.
The minivan drove straight down the median, turning over on the driver's side in the water, partially submerged.
With cars on both sides of the median stopping to help, and flames coming from the engine of the minivan, several people went to the driver's rescue, extinguishing the fire and helping the driver, who reportedly could not move on his own.
First responders arrived and were able to get the driver, whose name and age have not been released yet, out of the partially submerged vehicle, and on to medical care.
Those on scene said that it appeared the minivan veered off the road for no reason, leading to speculation that the driver may have had a seizure or other medical condition happen to him while driving.
When we learn more, we'll bring it. Be checking back frequently.
