WHITE CO., Ill. - An accident on Interstate 64 this morning in White County sent several to the hospital in its wake.

The accident occurred in the westbound lane of I-64 approximately a quarter-mile east of Mile Post 126 this morning (Thursday, September 23) at  8:34 a.m.

At that time, a red 2005 Kenworth truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer being driven by Raymond G. Nelson, 70, of Alvarado, Minnesota, was westbound in the driving lane on Interstate 64, approximately a quarter-mile east of mile post 126, when he began to merge into the passing lane.

At the same time, the driver of a silver 2002 Dodge Durango, a 17-year-old juvenile of Owensboro, Kentucky, was westbound in the passing lane driving alongside of the truck tractor.

As the truck tractor began to merge into the passing lane, the driver of the Dodge Durango attempted to avoid being struck by driving into the center median. The Dodge Durango then rolled onto its top, before skidding back onto the roadway and striking the Kenworth truck tractor.

Driver and passengers in the Dodge Durango (Jelkelah A. Johnson, 33, of Owensboro, Kentucky, as well as four juveniles from Owensboro, ages 10, 11, 12, and 16) were transported by various ambulance services to an area hospital.

Nelson did not report any injuries as a result of the crash.

The Dodge Durango had to be towed from the scene.

ISP District 19 was assisted at the crash scene by White County Ambulance Service, Edwards County Ambulance Service, Wayne County Ambulance Service, and Little Wabash Fire and Rescue.

Raymond G. Nelson was cited for Improper Lane Usage. The juvenile driver was cited for Failure to Secure a Child in an Approved Child Restraint System or Seat Belt.
