Mason Lee Ours

WHITE CO.— An Indiana man was taken into custody this morning, Wednesday, March 15, after police spotted him driving without taillights.

According to information filed in the case, at approximately 1:09 a.m. the reporting officer observed a green Ford Mustang drive off from Casey’s parking lot onto Main Street in Carmi and begin traveling westbound on Main Street without having taillights activated.

The officer was traveling eastbound on Main Street at the same time and turned around to get behind the Mustang and then initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Main Street and Marshall Place.

Through computer checks, authorities learned that the vehicle came back registered to Mason Lee Ours, 19, of 831 West Third St., Mt. Vernon, Ind.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Mr. Ours, who also had a passenger in the vehicle with him identified as 19-year-old Kole A. Bonham.

Computer checks also revealed that Ours’ driver’s license was suspended.

Ours was then asked to step out of the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

Subsequent to his arrest the vehicle was searched for towing with the inventory sheet including a metal air hose fitting, found in the center console of the vehicle, which had been used to smoke cannabis.

Ours was formally charged with Driving Without Valid Driver’s License, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Ours was released from police custody later in the same day after posting $150 cash bond.

L'Pree E. Collins

WHITE CO.— White County authorities made two arrests yesterday, March 15, one a woman for allegedly taking her roommate’s stuff and another with an outstanding arrest warrant out of Wayne County.

On Wednesday, March 15, at approximately 1 p.m. authorities responded to 123 10th St., Carmi in reference to a possible theft of vehicle and credit card.

The officer spoke with Sallie Hart.

Hart told officers that her vehicle, identified as a 2000 Chevy Impala and credit card had been taken sometime in the past few days without permission.

Hart said she believed that her roommate L’Pree Evette Collins, 48, was responsible.

She said she first realized her credit card was gone from her purse and then while doing a search for the purse realized that her vehicle was missing as was her roommate.

Hart told officers she checked and noticed that her credit card had been used to the tune of $1,000 of unauthorized charges.

At approximately 6:24 p.m. police were advised of a reckless driver turning on Oak Street from Main Street.

A check of the plate on the suspect vehicle came back as belonging to Ms. Hart.

When stopped, Collins told officers that she had permission from Hart to take the vehicle and simply didn’t wake her up before doing so.

She also admitted to taking the credit card out of Hart’s purse and using it to purchase a hotel room, gasoline and food.

Collins was taken into custody and Hart’s credit card was found inside her purse.

Collins was formally booked into the county jail on three counts of Theft, two felony and one a misdemeanor.

No bond information was available in the case.

RICHLAND COUNTY: No forward movement in Ramey’s case Thursday

GLENN RAMEY

RICHLAND CO., Ill. - As in the past couple of court settings for accused murderer /rapist Glenn Ramey, nothing happened yesterday in his hearing except to set the matter over for an April date.

Ramey, 53, most recently of Olney but originally from Johnson County, is the man accused of the murder and sexual assault of Sabrina Stauffenberg, 8, of Olney, back in November 2016.

He has been progressing through the court system very slowly since that time, the majority of the low speed attributed to a mid-December claim by the defense that the man wasn't quite with it and needed a psychological exam to determine whether Ramey was capable of standing trial and assisting in his own defense. This was predicted by members of his family as well as pretty much everyone who knows him, as he's gotten out of serious charges in the past by doing this very thing - claiming he's "mentally deficient" and didn't know what he was doing at the time the crime was committed. Psych evals do take a long time, and the last one he had sent him off to Choate in Anna for a couple of years. Unfortunately, they didn't keep him long enough, and due to the commitment, the crime he was under investigation for at the time - a theft in Crawford County - was dismissed, so he didn't go to DOC, either. Had he gone, he might not have been around in November 2016 when it's alleged he killed Sabrina.

There's still a little issue of the fact that he was "sane" enough to know what he was doing about five hours before Sabrina's death, since he was in court representing himself in a Small Claims case against former Olney mayor Tommie Fehrenbacher. Ramey claims he cut down ten trees for Fehrenbacher and didn't get paid for the job. So he had enough wherewithall to accomplish that appearance, argue his case against Fehrenbacher's attorney, current Olney mayor Ray Vaughn, and ask for money. What happened between that point in time at about 11 in the morning and what is alleged to have happened at around 5 p.m. later that day when Sabrina was abducted and then killed near the vinegar plant in Olney is probably something the defense is in the process of creating an excuse for, as, if he's not good at anything else, Ramey's REALLY good at creating excuses and blaming everyone around him for his own actions or lack thereof.

The case has been set for another status on April 6.

There's an update to report in this incident; this comes from Mr. Westfall's daughter, Rachel Attebury:

As some of you may have heard, dad was in a 4 wheeler accident this evening just before dark. Something happened with the 4 wheeler and it tossed Dad off and onto the pavement. He isn't quite sure exactly what happened, but we are thankful to God he wasn't hurt worse. He was life-flighted to St. Mary's hospital in Evansville with numerous injuries. Those injuries include broken ankle, fractured pelvis, bruised liver, 4 broken ribs, fractured transverse process in the lumbar (lower back), along with some road rash. No head or neck injuries. We are so Thankful it wasn't any worse. My dad could use prayers for the weeks to come. What a horrible way to end a birthday. ❤

Side note: we had all just returned home from St. Mary's a couple hours before his accident welcoming my miracle baby niece (Dad's granddaughter) into the world earlier that morning and it was also my Dad's birthday

Below is the original post put up earlier today:

WHITE CO., Ill. - White County sheriff's officials have released information on a serious four-wheeler accident that happened yesterday evening.

White County Sheriff Doug Maier said that at approximately 6:35 p.m. last night (Thursday, March 16), Douglas R. Westfall, 57, of rural Enfield, was operating a green Honda 4-wheeler on County Road 1800N when a traffic crash occurred.

Maier said evidence at the scene indicated Westfall lost control of the ATV before rolling the vehicle. West fall was thrown from the ATV.

The White County Ambulance Service responded and administered aid to Westfall. However, due to the extent of his injuries, an Air Evac helicopter was requested and responded to the scene. Westfall was then transported by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.

There's been no update on his condition. If we learn more, we'll post.

CARMI, Ill. - Illinois State Police District 19 Commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt, announces the results of a Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrol in Wayne County during March.

This NITE patrol allowed the ISP to focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to impaired driving and occupant restraint violations, especially between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Below are the stats:

Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Over half of all fatal crashes in Illinois occur at night. The NITE program allows officers to work even harder at removing dangerous impaired drivers from the road and making sure everyone is buckled up. This project is funded through the Illinois Department of transportation.

RICHLAND/CRAWFORD/JASPER COs., Ill. - On an inquiry yesterday by a reader, we were asked to look into the status of the two who were nabbed back in December 2016 in a really high-profile event that spanned three counties: Richland, Crawford and Jasper.

Turns out, both Shane Babbs and Tabitha Carwile have entered pleas in their cases and Babbs, at least, is already in prison, with Carwile having only just entered her plea Thursday.

Babbs, 30 and most recently of Oblong, entered a plea in his Richland County case (which is where the mess started December 11, 2016) of guilty to Residential Burglary, a Class 1 felony, on February 14 of this year. In Richland, he was sentenced to 7 years DOC and costs in the amount of $583.75, none of which has been paid.

In Jasper County, Babbs' Burglary charge there, a Class 2 felony, remains open. He's set for a hearing on it, however, on April 4.

Tabitha D. Carwile

Carwile, 28, also most recently of Oblong, entered her plea in Richland County Thursday, March 16, to her charge of Residential Burglary, a Class 1 felony. She received a sentence of 6 years DOC and must pay $488.75 in costs, none of which has been paid.

Her Jasper County Class 2 felony Burglary charge hasn't even been dealt with by Jasper County officials. She remains held at the Richland County Detention Center pending transfer to DOC, held on the cash bond in the Jasper case for good measure: $5,000.

WAYNE COUNTY: Traffic crash on interstate caused by deer

WAYNE CO., Ill. - Wayne County hunters had better get on it next deer season, as the venison on the hoof in the area are certainly in abundance and causing crashes.

The most recent occurred last night (Sunday, March 19) at about 7:48 p.m., when a deer strike occurred on Interstate 64 in Wayne.

Illinois State Police said that Hasan H. Dwelee, 27, of Louisville, Kentucky, driving a red 2016 Honda Fit, was traveling eastbound on 64 near mile post 116 when a deer entered his lane of travel. Dwelee was unable to avoid a collision with the deer, striking the animal with the front of the vehicle.

With Dwelee was Roaa K. Rahi, 26, also of Louisville.

Dwelee was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash. There was no word about the passenger. The vehicle was towed by the scene.

ISP District 19 was assisted at the crash scene by the Wayne County Ambulance Service and Fairfield Rural Fire Department.

There were no citations issued.

CARMI: Ms. Williams in the headlines again; two separate warrant arrests effected

Caitlin D. Williams, fresh mugshot

CARMI, Ill. - A Carmi gal who complained last year about coverage of one of her warrant arrests is back in the headlines again...on another warrant arrest.

Carmi authorities provided information this morning that 30-year-old Caitlin D. Williams, of West Kerney Street there in town, turned herself in very late Friday night on a Theft warrant out of White County.

Williams apparently is having a hard time keeping track of her court appearances and, according to White County Sheriff's Department paperwork, is having a hard time keeping her hands to herself, as the warrant she turned herself in on is a 2017 one for misdemeanor theft of under $500 (currency).

Caitlin Williams in the mug she was upset about

The filing is so new it's not available on judici (as they don't post charges generally until the warrant is served.) Therefore, it's unknown at this point where the alleged theft occurred, or from whom.

Williams posted $150 cash bond and a $20 booking fee to secure her release, but not before she posed nicely for her mugshot, which shows off her hair a little more than the one about which she complained last year.

In other Carmi activity, Sherry L. Shelton, 43, of Valter Drive in Carmi, was the subject of a shoplifting call out of Little Giant Grocery yesterday (Sunday, March 19).

Sherry Shelton

Reports indicate that Shelton was the subject of a call yesterday at about 3:21 p.m., indicating that she was in Little Giant Grocery Store on the southwest edge of town.

Turns out she was wanted on a 2016 failure to appear warrant for misdemeanor Retail Theft. She's currently a couple of months into a two-year supervision sentence on that. It doesn't appear that she's made any effort to pay on the $48 remaining in fines and fees over and above the $150 bond she posted when she was arrested in October 2016.

However, she was miraculously able to post $500 cash to bond out on the warrant arrest, and went on her way a lot lighter in the pocketbook.

Another BB gun stunt ends with two arrests, no injuries

You'll shoot your eye out, kid

WHITE CO.— It would appear BB guns are the firearm of choice for the FOID card-deprived.

On March 19 at approximately 4:08 p.m. the White County 911 dispatch received a call from Seth Howard in reference to a dispute in Crossville at the Rudolph Street Apartments.

Howard reported that an unknown make was with Angelica Weedman and threatened someone with a firearm.

Deputy Scott Cantrell, White County Sheriff Doug Maier and White County Deputy Randy Graves responded to the area to attempt to locate the male with the firearm.

Sheriff Maier was first to arrive and spoke with to the victim of the assault, Anthony Wood.

Wood told the sheriff that he had been dating Weedman, but had broke up with her that day.

He stated that Weedman and an unknown male came to her apartment and the male began threatening him.

Wood stated that he threatened to shoot him.

Wood could see a firearm in a holster on his side.

Wood stated they had words and then Weedman and the male subject walked toward Morrell Street.

Deputies Cantrell and Graves arrived in the area and the subject could not be located.

Cantrell spoke with Wood who tried to tell him where Weedman lived on Morrell Street.

Cantrell asked Wood to get in the squad car and show he and Graves where Weedman lives and he took them to 302 Morrell St. where several people were outside the residence.

Woods pointed to Jordan Prater who was asked if he had a firearm.

Prater said no.

Further questioning ended with Prater sticking to his story that he did not have a firearm on him and that he did not have one earlier.

A brief chat between deputy Graves and Angelica Weedman ended with Weedman confirming for officers that Prater did indeed have a firearm earlier when the incident described by Woods took place.

In what has become a dangerous game some play the “gun” turned out to be a BB gun that Prater informed officers was located in his pickup.

When located the BB gun looked identical to a real handgun with the exception of the clip which clearly was made for BBs.

Prater said he was walking Ms. Weedman to Davenport Street Apartments to get some of her things when they were confronted by her ex-boyfriend, identified as Woods.

Prater said Woods pulled a knife and that’s what prompted the BB gun to be pulled

Prater, 24, of 407 Schumaker St., Carmi was taken into custody and charged with an unidentified charge and Anthony W. Woods, 24, was charged with Assault.

Ms. Angelica Weedman, all of 18, was not charged, but might be searching for a better crowd to hang with.

No bond information was available in the case.

CARMI: Incorrect info in mayor’s article clarified

$

CARMI, Ill. - There's a correction we need to make in the Carmi election article in this issue (and yes, I know I haven't done Print Headlines yet...I'm working on it.)

The correction is that contrary to what's being OPENLY disseminated around town, Mayor Jeff Pollard doesn't own any interest in the Taco Factory restaurant, as we've been told for the past several months and  which we failed to check with Pollard himself on, because the ones who've been telling us this speak with authority.

In reality, Heather Price owns the place, which, we hear, is pretty bomb as far as taco-like food offerings go (one of our staffers has stopped there a few times, and he delivers this report to us; we have yet to try it, but when we're going through Carmi, we usually don't have a spare minute).

Anyway, Pollard doesn't own any interest in it; it's owned by one Heather Price. As it turns out, the folks we were conversing with on the matter have their own agenda, which is to defeat Pollard in the election. This was not something we learned until today. People are rotten. But then, if they had any positives to declare about their candidate, they could run the campaign on that. Instead, they have to make up stuff about the opponent. Typical political BS.

Anyway, that's what's going on. We apologize for any confusion this political sabotaging may have caused. Vote carefully April 4.

‘SHOT FIRED’ REPORT ENDS WITH NO ARRESTS

WHITE CO.— An incident this past Saturday has been addressed in reports from White County Sheriff Doug Maier.

Maier said that on March 18 at approximately 1:47 p.m. White County 911 received a call from Scott Brown in reference to his wife Vivian shooting a gun inside the couple’s former marital residence, located at 1290 North 1700 East.

Sheriff Doug Maier and deputy Randy Graves responded and spoke with Noal Scott Brown, 50, of 703 Sixth St., Carmi, who advised that he and his wife were having marital problems and he had moved out of the residence and now lives in Carmi.

Brown said he spent the night at the house with his wife, at 1290 North 1700 East, woke, left the residence for a time and returned and his wife asked him to follow her into the bedroom because she had a birthday present for him.

Brown said when he did his wife shut the door, picked up a rifle that was sitting on the bed.

Brown said he didn’t know if she meant to shoot him, her self or both.

He said he took the rifle from her before she could point it at herself.

While taking the gun away he said the rifle discharged firing a round into a nearby wall.

Brown said he then took the gun and ran outside.

Vivian Brown said that it was Scott that closed the bedroom door and that she had planned a day with him since it was his birthday.

She said that they were not arguing about anything.

Vivian Brown, 53, said she picked up the weapon, which had not been working properly, and handed it to Scott so he could take a look at it after they were done in the bedroom.

She said when she went to hand Scott the gun he grabbed it and went outside.

Vivian said she could not remember the rifle firing.

A couple, identified as Doug Miller, 37, and Miranda Burnett, 36, both living at the residence with Ms. Brown, were said to be across the hallway from the couple’s bedroom and did not hear a weapon fire.

No arrests were made, the weapon, a .22 caliber Remington, was taken into custody and the officers noted Vivian did not have a Firearm Owners Identification card.

Oberlender arrest

CLAY CO., Ill. - On March 11 the Sheriff’s Office returned their first K-9, Deputy Fallax, to duty in almost 20 years.

Handler Deputy Cory Heuerman and Fallax recently completed their dual purpose certifications at Vohne Liche Kennels in northern Indiana. Fallax is a 2 year Malinois that is trained in narcotic detection, apprehension and tracking.

Sheriff Andy Myers advises that the office’s main objective for Fallax is narcotic detection. Fallax is this office's proactive response to the fear of a heroin epidemic in Clay County.

"We want to do our part to keep any other families from being impacted or suffering the loss of a loved to the hands of this dangerous and deadly drug," Myers said in a press release. "The Sheriff’s Office knows that the interdiction of any illegal drugs may save someone’s life."

Deputy Heuerman and Fallax will be working together with local law enforcement and local canine units to help prevent and combat the drug issues in this county. The sheriff’s office greatly appreciates the support of these local businesses that have donated equipment, labor and funds to make this project possible. CARMI, Ill. - Carmi city police worked two traffic stops involving people allegedly driving while license suspended and handled a warrant arrest over this past weekend.

The first came about on Friday, March 24, when at about 9:14, Gregory Williams, 54, of Carmi, was stopped on Stewart Street at Fifth Street.

Gregory A. Williams

The Carmi officer, according to reports, observed Williams driving a red 1992 Chevy flatbed pickup truck, and apparently knew he was driving without a valid license and so Williams was pulled over.

Williams was taken to the White County Jail and released after posting $150 cash and receiving citations for Driving While License Suspended and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.

A second such stop occurred Saturday, March 25, at just before 6 p.m. at the Fairground at West Main Street in Carmi.

At that time, Carmi police stopped a 2015 Hyundai being driven by Amber N. Newman, 33, of Carmi, after a routine check of the vehicle's registration showed her license was suspended.

During the stop, Newman could not provide a valid insurance card, and the vehicle was towed from the scene, while Newman was cited for Driving While License Suspended and Operating Uninsured. She too posted $150 cash bond at the jail and was released.

Then a gal from El Paso, Illinois, was picked up on a warrant issued by an undisclosed county last night (Sunday, March 27) at 11:25 p.m.

Misty G. McFarland, 26, was the El Paso gal. While the nature of the warrant wasn't issued on police reports, she did post $2,500 cash bond and was released, so it must've been fairly serious.
