Jeffrey Snelling

CARMI— A pair of individuals who apparently took it upon themselves to not show up for scheduled court hearings were taken into custody Monday, one of them a repeatrepeatrepeat no-show and a familiar name in White County for her nonsense-fueled shenanigans.

The first, however, is Jeffrey D. Snelling, 41, of 503 Ivy St., Freeman Spur, who was taken into police custody after authorities say he walked into the local cop shop in Carmi Monday, August 14, at 7:43 a.m. and turned himself in on an active arrest warrant for Failure to Appear at a scheduled court date.

That warrant stemmed from a 2015 traffic case in which he was cited for Driving Suspended Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle and Speeding.

Snelling was sentenced in that case with court supervision for two years and ordered to pay $1,084 in fines and fees, of which he still owes $231

It is believed the payment of the remaining fines and fees, or failure to pay, which prompted the arrest warrant.

Snelling was released from police custody after posting a $500 cash bond, most of which will more than likely go toward paying those fines and fees.

Jennifer Batteese

Several hours after Snelling walked into police headquarters and turned himself in, a convicted batterer was taken into custody.

According to the information filed in the case, at 11:13 p.m. August 14, Jennifer Marie Batteese, 26, of P.O. Box 52, Maunee, was arrested on the city’s east side by officer Joshua Moore on an outstanding warrant for not showing up for a scheduled court date in a traffic case in which she was charged with Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle and Speeding.

She was sentenced in that case to court supervision for six months and ordered to pay $929 in fines and fees, of which she still owes $829.

It is believed that it was a pay or appear situation, which lead to the warrant when she didn’t pay or appear in court to explain why.

Batteese’s criminal history includes an April 8, 2013 conviction for Battery Causing Bodily Harm for which she was sentenced to court supervision for two years.

She was released from police custody this morning, August 15 after a $300 cash bond was posted online.
