EDWARDS CO., Ill. - Two people were sent to a hospital last night following a vehicle collision with a truck on Illinois Route 1.

Illinois State Police in District 19 said the accident occurred at 11:46 p.m. last night (Tuesday, July 11).

According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, the driver of a gray 2014 Kia Forte, Priscilla Sears, 33, of Carmi, was southbound on Route 1 approximately one-sixteenth of a mile north of Illinois Route 130 when she became distracted by a rear seat juvenile passenger.

This caused the Kia to cross the center line of the roadway.

The driver of a 2015 Volvo truck tractor/semi-trailer combination, Kenneth L. Sams, 58, of Molena, Georgia, observed the Kia coming into his lane and made evasive maneuvers to avoid striking the vehicle head-on. The driver's side of the Kia collided with the side of the 2017 Hyundai semi-trailer resulting in a sideswipe collision.

Two of the occupants of the Kia, including a passenger, Heather D. Bond, 33, of Carmi, were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries; however, the juvenile wasn't injured.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by Little Wabash Fire, Edwards County Ambulance, Wabash General Ambulance, and Rick's Towing of Grayville.

Sears was cited for Improper Lane Usage.
