GRAYVILLE, Ill. - A little shaker struck the Calvin bottoms area south of Grayville in White County earlier today.
The U.S. Geological Survey shows that the magnitude 2.2 - barely enough to show up on most shakemaps depending on setting - occurred at about 4:45 a.m. this morning a quarter till 10 this morning (Wednesday, May 31) if our reading of the information is accurate (that's UTC, and we can't find the way to translate it to local time anymore on the USGS site, so it might have been six hours earlier in actual time...we'll update if we figure it out.).
^^^as you can see...we figure it out. ^_^
Above is a map of the location; the Calvin bottoms is a little place south of Grayville on Illinois Route 1 where the rail used to pass through; since the rail's been taken out, it's a sparsely-populated place but it's a sure bet someone there felt it.
Below are the stats:
For those mobile-y challenged, the depth was 6.6 miles; the rest is technical stuff including distances from major cities.
If you felt it, you can do a "felt report" to tell USGS...which we urge all to do. It improves the chances of funding for monitoring of these little shakers, in case the big one is coming and we might be prepared better for it.
And of course, if you felt it, feel free to share your experience, either here or at any of our social networking pages.
