HAMILTON CO., Ill. - A McLeansboro sex offender has been sentenced to Illinois Department of Corrections for failing to notify a change of address in Hamilton County.
John D. Smith, 28, of McLeansboro took a plea today (Thursday, December 3) to serve 5 years in D.O.C. with 1 year of M.S.R. (parole) for failing to notify a change of address register as a sex offender, which is a Class 3 felony, said Hamilton County prosecutor Justin Hood.
He was given credit for 45 days in custody in White County Jail.
Hood said that Smith had moved away from an address at 309 S. Locust St. in McLeansboro to the Carmi area, according to roommates at the address, for more than the required 3-day notification.
Officer Stephen Miller from the McLeansboro Police Department handled the investigation.
Smith was arrested on October 19, 2015 and remains in custody in White County jail pending transfer to D.O.C.
