MARION CO., Ill.---No one's ever in the humor to hear about animals being abused, mistreated or killed...but everyone appreciates a good rescue story.
And that's just what happened Sunday morning in Marion County, specifically on Interstate 57 that bisects the county at Kinmundy.
Some jerk abandoned 15 puppies on the northbound exit ramp from I-57 to Kinoka Road not far from Kinmundy, apparently hoping that passing traffic would kill off the little ones.
A passing trucker thought they were a piece of shredded tire and reported it to the sheriff's department.
However, when the responding deputy, Craig Vierra, arrived, he instead found 15 wiggling little pups of varying descriptions (ages not estimated) which, it was later surmised, might have been from differing litters.
He scooped up all 15 and brought them back to the department. Once there, an animal rescue in St. Charles, Missouri, was contacted about the little guys, and they agreed to take all of them in. However, that proved not to be necessary...at least not for all of the pups. By the time arrangements had been made for the St. Charles location, three of the pups had been adopted out to various members of the sheriff's department or dispatch.
Now, all that's left to do is identify who did the dastardly deed. If anyone has any information about the puppy-dumper, they're asked to call the Marion County Sheriff's Department at (618) 548-2141. Hopefully, he or she will be found and brought to justice, as it's a crime to abandon animals that way in the state of Illinois.
