EDWARDS CO., Ill.---Although Edwards is one of southern Illinois' smallest counties, it has quite a bit on the ballot in the various towns and villages.
As well, our article in this current edition, Consolidated Election 2015 Preview (March/April) on stands right now, has a bit of a congratulatory air for Edwards as they're really moving into some progressive times.
Here's the big article with the run-down on all of the election activities, Edwards County comes out of the good-ol-boys mentality and into the light:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having gone through some serious dry spells as well as lengthy terms wherein those without the public’s best interest in mind have held sway, it appears that at least in some quarters of Edwards County, common sense has come into being with candidates for public office.
And while there may not be many contested races, the fortunate residents of this tiny county’s few burgs at least have some decent individuals to represent them by default.
Albion
Uncontested races are the order of the day in Albion, where the past couple of years have been filled with one debacle after another, in particular, where the Rural Fire Department’s new facility was going to be located.
That situation was rectified after a change of leadership came into play in 2013, in particular with the election of Steve McMahel as mayor to take over for Ryan Hallam, who managed to get the city into a lawsuit with Greenwalt and Sons Construction over the fire department. Hallam actually had resigned just prior to the election that year, but McMahel, having been a former mayor for a number of years, was competent enough to lead the city in the right direction and now, Aratraxia will be siting a medical marijuana grow operation in Albion under McMahel’s capable guidance.
A good city council is required, however, to round out the representation.
And while there are no contested offices, for the most part it appears as though at least a couple of community-minded individuals are up for the job.
In Ward 1, Terry Harper, Albion’s premier CPA, is running unopposed; and in Ward 3, Don Rigg is unopposed as well. Those two have proven themselves to be civic-minded, with Harper as a ward alderman for two terms....
